PRP-Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Aging Skin

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) also known as Plasma Rich in growth factors is the latest tendency in anti-aging. The treatment reverses common aging signs in the skin specifically in the areas of the face, neck, hands and other parts of the body. The advantages of PRP over other common anti-aging treatments like Botox are it’s unique natural quality. The therapy uses the patient’s own blood making the treatment hypoallergenic. Upon activation, PRP is injected into wrinkles for immediate volume augmentation and long lasting collagen-regenerating effects. Additionally, it rejuvenates the texture and vitality of your skin by creating new blood vessels. Newly created vessels provide vital nutrients to the skin to maintain it’s youth.

Certain areas of our bodies usually age much quicker than others due their exposure to sun, free radicals and other aging factors. These areas such as the thin area under our eyes and the skin on our neck show dramatic improvement with PRP Therapy to reverse signs of aging. Also, the lines on the upper lips, usually visible in many smokers, can improve in depth and hydration.

PRP Therapy will improve general texture and tone to any area that the platelet and growth factor rich blood is injected. For cosmetic application, it is usually recommended to have a minimum of three treatments, approximately one month apart. It is always best to wait a minimum of three months after the third treatment session before making a judgment on the results. Some patients will continue to achieve even further changes for up to three to six months after their final treatment.

An appointment for a PRP treatment will take about 30 minutes to one hour, however the treatment time varies depending on the number of areas you are targeting.

PRP therapy is autologous, which means it comes from one’s own body. Therefore, we should all be good candidates for this treatment if we want to improve the quality and appearance of our skin.

PRP can be used to treat:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Fine lines around the mouth
  • Dull, rough, or grey skin tone and texture
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Acne scarring
  • Skin around the eye, neck and décolletage areas

PRP requires little recovery time. The treatment may cause redness and some tenderness on the first day similar to sunburn. Occasionally, some bruising may occur. The initial redness will subside on the second day, and some patients then notice some swelling and a sandpaper texture to the skin the day after treatment. By the third day, the swelling should diminish. The sandpaper texture to the skin may continue for up to a week. Though you may notice these changes, you will not likely have any significant downtime as a result of these symptoms. You can go back to your regular daily activities after your appointment, and you can even apply light make-up.

It will only be a few days before patients begin to see noticeable results. However, it will be 2 to 3 months, for the results to be most visible, individuals report fully refreshed skin that looks and feels more youthful. These results can last between 1 to 2 years afterwards depending on the individual.

After your PRP therapy, skin hydration and sun protection are essential. A daily skin care regime that includes a good moisturizer and multiple applications of sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher throughout the day is critical.

Dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid like Restylane and Juvederm are a gel that fills in lines and folds on the face. The body absorbs the product within 6 to 12 months, and a repeat treatment is then required. PRP stimulates the body to create its own new collagen and tissue to develop youthful volume and improve tone and texture.  PRP can often be used in areas where dermal fillers are not safe. PRP treatment does not target individual lines and wrinkles but rather improves the overall quality of the targeted area.

Early clinical data and positive patient reports indicate a strong future for PRP therapy. PRP treatment is ideal for individuals who are looking for a gradual improvement in their skin’s appearance, and seek noticeable & natural results. It is appropriate for individuals with mild to moderate signs of aging.
